My learning path to be the best or among the best

Image

How to succeed in an interview

Image
Interviews can be nerve-wracking, but there are steps you can take to stay calm and make sure you give it your best shot.  Interviews are difficult. Worrying about how to get through them is normal, but I’m here give you a more positive perspective, and share with you some advice that can help you through your next interview! Be optimistic On your way to an interview, I would encourage you to be composed as you walk in. Imagine that you are the star, and you want to deliver a great performance that impresses everyone in the room. Staying optimistic can really help give a good first impression. While on your journey, listen to light-hearted music, or any songs that put you in a good mood. Personally, I do this a lot, because music has this magical effect of transporting you to another place and letting you be happy, in the moment. Another thing I always do is to search for some inspirational quotes. And here is one that I hope will inspire you: “The will to win, the desire to ...

Eight statements to build skills

Image
In this student blog, Tamecah shares eight statements that she reads daily to help her recognise her strengths. During my studies I was fixated on assigned module reading and essay writing, because reading and writing are fundamental components of becoming a legal professional. But is it all about academic supremacy or does character and life experience bring anything to the table? The following eight statements are inspired by my internships with an immigration and commercial law firm, where training focused on personal management skills and leadership training. Before events, I read the eight statements aloud and make a conscious effort to develop these characteristics and skills. If you're home alone during lockdown with no way to exercise these skills then you should pay attention to how you interact with others on social media (i.e., LinkedIn). The key is recognising the areas that could be improved to leave a lasting impression. This list is personal and yours may be differen...

My experience with loneliness

Image
Loneliness is something that everybody experiences at least once in their life and has especially been the case since the pandemic. Being locked in the house, unable to see friends and family, affected people across the globe. I've had big periods of loneliness over the past few years. Surprisingly, it wasn't due to COVID. One of the worst periods was after my best friend passed away in June 2021. She died by suicide at 23 years old. The month following, leading up to her funeral, was incredibly isolating. It's not common to lose your best friend at 21. People didn't know how to talk to me, how to console me. I heard phrases like "it’s selfish of her" or "look at all the people she left behind" and I would shut down. It felt like people were blaming her and I spent so much of the little energy I had defending her. People would say they were sorry for my loss, but I know they weren't saying it for my benefit. I felt so angry at the world, not bec...

My three-year journey with the University of London

Image
In this student blog, Haala looks back at her three-year journey with the University of London and looks forward to her future career. “What do you want to do after graduation?” “What are your plans for your future?” “Any career goals?” These are the questions that used to haunt me in my sleep. When I embarked on my LLB study journey with the University of London, my first thoughts were; “it’s time to reward myself”. I can tell all new students from my personal experience that the journey is worth it! Studying my bachelor’s from the University of London has given me access to the minds of the world-class researchers and cutting-edge research. More than the ceremonious act of graduating this year, it would be the learning experience that I will treasure most. The fact that thousands of students like me from all over the world have been given a chance to study at their own pace is truly wonderful. The egalitarian nature of the programme is something to be truly celebrated. Throughou...

Loneliness and finding comfort in things I enjoy.

Image
Autophobia: the fear of being alone. My biggest fear, and what gives me hope.  I’m scared of extreme isolation. I love “me-time” but constant, uncontrollable time alone? That’s scary. I use the time I have to myself to focus and really get to grips with what makes me tick, and to understand myself better, but I want to inspire and be inspired. I want to be the best version of myself not just for my own benefit, but to help others be the best version of themselves as well. I was moved by some of my idols, and though I can’t say if I’ll have the same impact on others, I’d like to at least try! The thing is I don’t really fit in anywhere. Socially I feel like I’m not the same as everyone else. I’m always the odd one out in the group for a multitude of reasons. My interests are never the same as others, and without generalizing or sounding critical about society in 2022, I don’t like doing what most 21-year-olds in the world like doing. I’m super introverted, and although I would...

Creativity in computing

Image
No one likes buggy code, but what if not all bugs are bad? Kyle explores how being creative can be beneficial when coding.  Semantic bugs are errors in programming that do not produce error messages or stop the code from running. Instead, they perform in a way that deviates from your expectations, causing unexpected behaviours. As tedious as these can be to debug, maybe not all of them have to be fixed.  Being creative is a beneficial skill in programming, as not all problems have a common answer. Obviously, doing something that no one has done before is great, but the true power of creativity is from the problem solving and not the final product. Not only is it fun to try something new and fresh, you will most likely encounter problems, errors and even new coding techniques you’ve never used before; all of which makes you a better programmer even if your code becomes redundant or is not as cool as you thought it would be.  As my favourite game director Neil Druckma...

Storytellers of data, fortune tellers of the future

Image
“What do data scientists, well, do?” Yukta’s blog discusses some of the most interesting and exciting facets of the data science field, and what is at the core of the data scientist profession. Looking back on the last three years of my undergraduate journey, I cannot help but reflect on a particular question.  A question that has piqued my mind time and time again, that has been asked by friends and family alike. A question that I have eventually had to ask myself, that has brought upon pondering and reflection for days on end.   "What do data scientists, well, do?"  It seems like a simple question, Google-able if you will. Upon which we are inundated with a sea of search results that neither deliver the true definition of this up-and-coming occupation, nor convey the true beauty of data science. The fact is, data science has long been misunderstood as a profession that deals with data in its primitive sense, accompanied by tools and algorithms that appear to ...

Reflecting on my first year of university

Image
Reflection is a great tool, not only to see what can be improved, but also to celebrate what went well. In this blog, Computer Science student Kyle reflects on his first year as a University of London student.  Being at University of London for nearly a year now, I thought it would be a good idea to look back at what my first year was like as an online student, some of the things I did well, some of the things I could do better in the years to come, and my thoughts on my experience so far. The good I approached my studies by doing everything that was required, and a little bit more. At the time it felt like it was further knowledge that I wouldn’t need, but actually, I did need it later. Doing that little bit more not only solidified my knowledge on the topics, but made understanding more complex topics that little bit easier. It also improved my grades, as some of the grading criteria required us to show evidence of further knowledge, and without realizing in the beginning, doing ...

Move over procrastination!

Image
It is easy to give in to procrastination when there is a lot on your plate. Here is what I did to overcome procrastination and become more productive .  I used to be a world class procrastinator. In fact, for the longest time, procrastinating was my forte. And no, it did not do me any good. In a time when remote working has become the norm, it is easy to sit back and think there is ample time to work and study and that’s when we lose track of time. That is exactly what happened to me. When exams got closer, I panicked because I couldn’t squeeze in enough study time to catch up with what I missed while I watched hundreds of documentaries and movies.   Now I won’t go into details of that experience. But I will share what I did to overcome procrastination. I must warn you that it wasn’t a bed of roses. Once you get used to being a procrastinator, it takes time to get back on track. The important thing is to take that first step.   First of all, all credit goes to B...

Day in the life of a law student in Guernsey

Image
Our new Day in the Life series shows you a glimpse of what life is like for your fellow students. This week, we're taking a glimpse inside LLB student and paralegal Rebekah's day. Hi, I’m Ahsaan I live in Guernsey, which is a small island in the Channel Islands. I work full-time as a paralegal at a law firm and I’m in my last year of my degree. I’ve been working since 2017; I started studying towards my degree in 2018. Today is a Wednesday, a work day. Most of my days are the same, to be honest, unless it is a weekend or a bank holiday! 07:00 : My boyfriend’s alarm goes off. That’s okay though, because I’ve got another half an hour until I need to be up. I put some background noise on my headphones and head back to sleep to grab those extra few minutes. 07:30 : My alarm goes off. I start work at 9am, and even though my commute is only ten minutes (no commute is very far in Guernsey!), I like to leave at 8:30am. I know I only need half an hour to get ready, so I get out my phon...

Has your motivation dipped recently? Keep reading as Roberto explains how he keeps his motivation high while studying.

Staying motivated is an art that few master. For most, it almost seems fleeting. Like waves that graze the seashore, it comes and goes – often receding at the untimeliest of occasions when we need it most.   Like many of you, I dream of building a better future for myself and those in my care. The best way to predict the future, as they say, is to design and create it for yourself. This all sounds simple in theory until one comes face-to-face with the uphill battle itself.  Upon commencing my Master’s programme in Marketing with the University of London, I had to allocate my time and energy to work, family and my personal life. What most challenged me was not the time management; it was the energy management aspect – maintaining high-levels of focus and output in the present moment.   The question then arises: what differentiates those who achieve great results from those who only manage to get by? Many would claim it is talent, but we have seen plenty of inspir...

NASA's twin Voyager probes are about 45

NASA's twin Voyager probes are about 45An artist's rendering of Voyager 1 spacecraft in interstellar space. (Image credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech)On August 20, 1977, NASA's Voyager 2 spacecraft launched to space. Its twin, Voyager 1, launched 16 days later. Today, they are not only the most distant man-made objects — at 12 billion and 14.5 billion miles (19.3 billion and 23.3 billion kilometers) away from Earth, respectively — but also NASA's longest-operating mission, continuing to send back data from their interstellar journeys toward the edge of the solar system as they approach their 45th birthdays. But each Voyager spacecraft is powered by a finite nuclear energy source, and both sources are dwindling to dangerously low levels. Each spacecraft carries a store of the radioactive isotope plutonium-238; as the isotope decays, it releases energy that is converted into electricity by three radioisotope thermoelectric generators (RTGs). At launch, the RTGs provided each spac...
